Development of balance of plant for a ‘plug and play’ hydrogen fuel cell system

Today, fuel cell manufacturers deliver a ‘module’ that essentially includes the stack. For the use of this type of solution to become widespread, a “plug and play” fuel cell system is needed that is easy to install and to couple to the existing installation. In other words, in addition to the module with the stack, it must include a balance of plant to maintain it at operating pressure and temperature conditions, an inverter to deliver the power supply to the load at the required voltage and current level, a control system for its management, as well as a containerization concept. This is what is known as a fuel cell system.

The impact of this project will be to consolidate a product with Aragonese seal of direct integration, versatile, easy to install, modular and cost competitive. With this, it is expected that the application of fuel cells will increase and can serve multiple sectors where there is market potential, such as isolated renewable energy installations (off-grid), telecommunications antennas in isolated or weak networks, mountain shelters, islands and as a replacement for diesel generators.

In order to develop the project, SFICE has decided to count on the collaboration of the Foundation for the Development of New Hydrogen Technologies in Aragon, which has unique capabilities in hydrogen and fuel cell technologies, recognized nationally and internationally. This proven experience will complement the valuable capabilities of SFICE and will enable the long-term success of the project.

This project has received funding from the Digital, Innovative and Sustainable Industry grant program, funded through the Recovery Assistance for Cohesion and Territories of Europe (REACT-EU) initiative, after receiving a positive evaluation of the expedient 011/2022/IDIS.
